Comfrey - Symphytum officinalis
Comfrey is widely used for its wound healing abilities, especially bruising. Use externally as a compress or incorporate it into a salve or cream. The leaves and root can both be used, the root is considered stronger and the leaves more subtle in their healing properties.
The herb can be made into an excellent all-round liquid fertiliser and is also a useful plant for use in compost heaps.
Do not take this herb internally as it contains small amounts of alkaloids that are potentially harmful. Although you would need to consume a lot to cause harm, the real benefits of this plant are in its external use.
